View Article  Week 1 Summer Term 08/09

Summer Term is here and if this weeks weather is anything to go by, it will hopefully be a warm one!!

The Year 5 trip to Isle of Wight is on it's way back as we speak, so I will not mention this too much as I already have been giving daily updates (below) and I will wait for Mr Bird and Mrs Johnston to write about this for next weeks blog.

Headlines from Mr Knight

Here we are back at school for the most exciting and enjoyable term of the school year. Why exciting? Because every week is full of things happening that keep the children and the staff interested and inquisitive. Why enjoyable? Because everything that has gone before this term now starts to have an effect and the fruits of the year's hard work work begins to really show. Walking around the school with a prospective parent earlier today I saw so many good things going on from an older child sharing some learning with a reception child to our nursery children sitting very quietly, drinking milk and listening very intently to a piece of music. Our school is a really good place to be and it gets better and better this term!

Our Year 5 children have enjoyed a very special week. Some have spent their days on a residential visit to the Isle of Wight (abroad as many of them were told!) while the remainder have been enjoying a range of great activities with Mr Duff and Mrs Amran. The children who have been away have been very lucky with the weather and I'm sure that they will have many great experiences to share when they return. Sadly I missed out on the pizza that was made by the Year 5s yesterday - but I'm sure those of you who got to sample it at home thoroughly enjoyed it! Have a good weekend.

So what else has been happening in and around Darlinghurst Primary and Nursery School this week?

Nursery - We have had a lovely time this week playing outside in the warm sunshine, it has been nice to not have to struggle with putting our coats on. Mrs Elliott and Mrs Essex have created a supermarket in our role play area, we have all been shopping and have bought lots of food. Our topic this term is food so we are looking forward to cooking and eating lots of different things.

RW - Mrs Weston - RW started their brand new topic of 'Jungle Animals' this week. We have discussed which animals live in the jungle, located which parts of the jungle they live in, discussed the word camouflage and watched the short story of 'The Mixed Up Chameleon', drawn camouflaged pictures of the animals, used clip art in ICT to find and label jungle animal pictures and wrote 'Guess Who?' sentences about jungle animals. Some of us started making jungle animal board games (based on snakes and ladders) and we all listened to the classical composer Saint Saens' 'Carnival of the Animals' in music and matched the music to jungle animal pictures.

RM - Mrs Collinson - It was lovely to see all the children back at school this week safe and happy to be back learning lots of new things.  This half term we are thinking about Jungle animals and have been very busy trying to camoflage lots of different animals.  We didn't want our jungle animals to be mixed up like the Chameleon in Eric Carle's story!!

Here's what the children have said they have enjoyed this week:

Gemma: 'I liked making my collage of a lion with tissue paper, yellow felt and pastels.'

Kyle said 'I enjoyed Mrs Collison reading the story of Mo's Smelly Jumper.   It was funny when all the mummy jungle animals fell in the muddy puddle.'

Libby said 'I liked being the baby in the role play area and Clio was a very good mummy!'

Have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you all on Monday - Mrs Collison

1/2D - Mrs Dutton - A lovely week to start this term. Our topic is Materials and in it we will be thinking about materials we can squash, twist, bend and stretch. Mrs Dutton recieved a surprise letter with 'Flat Stanley' inside so we looked at where in America he had come from.We have started to read the story of Flat Stanley  by Jeff Brown. We are going to be thinking about what materials we could make our own Flat Stanley from. We have also looked at what makes a traditional story and have read one set in Africa.

1/2B - Mrs Barrington - A short term with lots to pack in.   I hope you all enjoyed the Easter break as much as l did!   We are learning about materials and relating them to The Great Fire of London for our history and science work.  In literacy we have started looking at the features of traditional stories and the children are really good at joining in with all the repeating sentences.  In numeracy some of us have moved onto three and four digit numbers.  Well done!   We are hoping for the warm weather to continue next week especially Wednesday for our trip to the church.

3/2B - Miss Bernard - Hello everybody!

Welcome back, hope that you all had a great Easter break. I had a fabulous one! I cannot believe that we are into the summer term. I know keep saying this, but it is flying by. We must be really enjoying ourselves.

We have only been in four days but the children have achieved well and worked very hard. We have been doing an author study on Jeremy Strong, the children enjoy and love reading his books. Here are some of their comments:

"I liked doing Jeremy Strong presentations"- Hannah
"I have enjoyed learning about Jeremy Strong"- Scarlett
"The Jeremy Strong books are very funny"- Bethany
"I liked Jeremy Strong because I wanted to see everybody's presentations"- Thomas

In Numeracy we have been rounding 2 and 3 digit numbers up to 10 and 100. The children enjoy their numeracy have had fun doing it:

"I have really enjoyed rounding up and down in numeracy"- Raman
"I liked rounding numbers up and down"- Ryan

We have also started to research The Vikings. We discussed and looked at where they came from and also re-enacted a Viking invasion:

"I liked the Viking role play because we learned more about what they did"- Mikayla

Have enjoyed first week back children, thank you for working so hard.

Have a lovely weekend - Miss Bernard

4B - Miss Bolton - Welcome Back! Hope everyone enjoyed their Easter break and is ready for the summer term! In 4B this week we have begun our new topic of 'film', looking at film reviews and writing some of our own, which was great fun! We also discussed early film techniques such as the 'thaumatrope' and 'flick books' which led to designing and creating our own that were absolutely fantastic, so well done to everyone for their hard work. The human skeleton played it's part in our learning experience too, 'Bob' our resident skeleton made a welcome appearence and wowed the class with his bones! Well done to 4B for an excellent week of hard work.....lets keep it going!

4J - Mrs Johnston - This weeks Blog has been written by Charlie and Alexia from class 4J.

This week for our class it has all been about the History of Film and how it was over a hundred years ago. We have had Mrs Chatterton and Miss Bolton as Mrs Johnston has been in the Isle of Wight with the year 5's, enjoying herself!
We have really enjoyed this week - the teachers have been great!
We have made our own thaumatropes - a Victorian image toy. The whole class had fun doing this. We also made Victorian flick books which makes drawings look like they are moving. We also wrote a review of our favourite movie.
This week has been GREAT!!!

Year 5 with Mr Duff - What a week !!! Lots of fun was had by everyone including Mrs Amran, Mrs Evans and myself. I am not sure how we fitted it all in but we just about managed to. The highlight for me had to be making the pizzas and having the BBQ today.

I will just add that not only have I had lots of fun, but I have been extremely impressed with you this week. It was a pleasure to have old and news faces mixed into one class.

Back to 5D and 5B next week but I am sure all children will have lots of stories to tell.

Isle of Wight Update....(from Mr Bird via text!)

Monday - We arrvied safely. Children were brilliant with no sickness. They only asked 3,000 times if we were there yet. They are now getting the site tour and excitement levels are rising!!

Tuesday - As you can imagine the day started very early with everyone eager to get on. It was great to see all the smiling faces and hear the various tales about how their sleepover went.

Weather is fantastic, food is being enthusiastically eaten and activities are spot on.

Caving, climbing, quads, creating a computer game and a very messy activity have been enjoyed by everyone today, so we are sure they will fall asleep much sooner tonight!!

All the children are very happy and are thrilled by their successes so far.

We will tell you more tomorrow. Bye from all on the Isle of Wight.

Wednesday - Still good weather. Sun cream being used. Slept well and had to be woken up today. Abseiling, assault course, team challenge and crime investigation. Having excellent time.

Thursday - I spoke to Mr Bird this morning and he was telling me how great the children had been. A credit to themselves and the school.

I managed to catch him over breakfast, and there was a lovely buzz in the background. I could picture the children all excited about the day ahead.

Anyway, here is the update from the Isle of Wight....

Lots of sun, lots of activities!!

During night line the children managed to find the muddiest puddle ever, Joe Mcfarquhar wore white! Aeroball, zipwire, disco tonight followed by the packing game.

Friday - Speaking to Mr Bird this evening (Thursday) he told me that they have activities in the morning and then will be packing up and heading home.

Mr Bird also said that he will let me know how the journey home is going and then I can then add that to here.

Will update more tomorrow......

Friday update..... Just heard from Mr Bird and he said that the coach will be back at the school for around 6pm. Any changes to that will be text to you.

Hope this blog entry has been helpful this week and I am sure you will hear all about their fantastic trip over the weekend.

View Article  Week 12 Spring Term 08/09

So the Spring term has come to a close and Easter is upon us. Time seems to be passing very quickly!!

Anyway, have a great break and remember the first day back is Tuesday 21st April, unless you are the Year 5 children going to the Isle of Wight. We will see you on Monday 27th April.

Football match against St.Helens

Football Round Up

On Wednesday this week Darlinghurst played a match against St Helens at the Pavilion Drive Stadium. Our captain, Ben Carr, led the team to a well deserved and hard fought 0 – 0 draw. Most of the game was played in the St Helens half of the pitch but we just couldn’t finish of the chances we created. The game was very tight and St Helens did have the odd chance but or goalkeeper Cian and the defence managed to keep them out. Overall it was a good hard game played well by both teams. Matthew Lord was named as player of the match for some excellent defensive work. The team would like to thank Mr Hautler for sharing his expertise, knowledge and all round excellence in football with them (he told me to write this bit!) - Ben Carr

 Headlines from Mr Knight

Here we are at the end of another term. Time really does fly when we are in school. Last night we held a meeting for the parents and children who are going on the school journey to the Isle of Wight at the beginning of the new term - it hardly seems like a few weeks ago that the current year 6 children returned from their visit!

The last day of his term will be quite a sad one for many members of the school community. Mrs Beryl Day has worked at Darlinghurst for many years and she has been involved in the lives of many children throughout the school during that time. Today she is retiring and we will miss her quiet efficiency and kind ways for many years to come. As a special treat she will be accompanying the school journey children to the Isle of Wight with Mr Bird and Mrs Johnston. We all wish her well for the future and would like to assure her that will always be welcome in school.

I hope you all enjoy a very happy Easter holidays and come back to school safe and sound on Tuesday 21st April. Personally I'm looking forward to a few longer sleeps - and hopefully a little more of the spring sunshine. Have a good break!

So what has been happening at Darlinghurst Primary and Nursery School this week?

Nursery - We have been very busy in the Nursery this week, we have decorated some egg shapes using glitter, sequins and thick pens. We also made some chocolate Easter nests and put 6 eggs in them, Mrs Essex made some for the teachers but they were only allowed 3 eggs!

RM - Mrs Collinson - Another exciting week with the children amazing me with all their fantatic ideas and enthusiasm to learn.  Here is what some of the children have said.

Olivia W said:  'I have enjoyed planting cress seeds and making sure it doesn't die at home.  I will remember to water it'
Ellie said 'I liked learning about dandelions and how you can blow their seeds to make a wish.'
Mitchell said 'I learnt about the giant character in Jack and Beanstalk.  He lived in a castle with his wife'

All thats left now is to wish you a happy Easter. Keep safe and see you all in 2 weeks!!

RW - Mrs Weston - RW finished off our 'Growing' topic focussing on plants this week. We cut out and labelled a flowering plant, looked at a dandelion life cycle, planted and watched our cress seeds germinate, read, talked about then drew our favourite characters from 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and prepared our Easter holiday homework cress seed diary. Mrs Weston and Miss Porter wish everybody a happy and restful Easter holiday. we will see you on Tuesday 21st April.

3/2B -Miss Bernard -  Hello everybody!

We have had a great end of term week. The children worked brilliantly together making merchandise and setting up their own egg shops. They had to make their eggs as attractive and as sellable as possible. They also made signs and price labels for their shops. They had to appoint their best mathematicians as shop keepers. They brought in bags, purses, wallets and aprons to add to the shopping experience. They also had to see which group made the most profit, for which they received a prize.
The children have also made some lovely Easter/Spring Baskets and cards. Here are some children's comments about this week's activities:

I enjoyed making my Spring card, our Dad's helped us to make them last week.- Hannah

I enjoyed making Easter baskets, I was excited to see what it would turn out like.- Ella

The egg shop was great fun. I enjoyed buying and working out what money to give back.- Josh

I liked doing the shop because "we won!"- Scarlett

Making my basket because it was fun.- Ben

I liked the egg shop, I liked buying stuff.- Liam

Thanks for your comments children. Have a great Easter/Spring holiday! - Miss Bernard

3/2C - Mrs Chatterton - We have been doing Easter baskets , Easter cards and paintings. It was fun.The Easter baskets looked like rabbits and the cards were in the shape of a duck.We also did a science test a comprehension test and a maths test.
by Devlin

4B - Miss Bolton - So here we are at the end of the Spring Term. Where does the time go?! This week has been Easter all the way. Learning the Easter story and spending a whole day making Easter chick baskets. Hopefully they will take pride of place in your homes this Easter as the children put a huge amount of work into them. They look pretty good!
Our recyling campaign is going very well. The children are really understanding how every single person can make a difference. Thank you to all of you sending cans in. So far we've collected over 150 and have saved enough energy to power a tv for 25 hrs.
Next term things will be a little different as we are changing to curriculum to a more thematic approach. Basic Literacy, Numeracy, Science and ICT will be taught but most other subjects will be intergrated into our chosen topic of 'Film through the ages'. We will also be covering our History topic of Tudor Britain in between.
Remember, children are not back till Tuesday 21st April. Hope you all have a great Easter break.

4J - Mrs Johnston - I can't believe it's the end of term.  We have all worked hard and had lots of fun so I think we all deserve a rest! This week we have been finishing and evaluating our chairs.  I think we have some budding furniture designers among the class.  Your child should have brought their child home - hopefully in one piece!
We have also spent a lot of time making our Easter baskets.  These have taken far longer than I expected but the class have been great, handling cutting out, paint, water and lost pieces with maturity.  It was pleasing to see the 'eggsperts' (groan) helping out some of the others.
Have a lovely holiday and enjoy taking life easy for a bit.  I will be at the Isle of Wight with Year 5 when we return but Mrs Chatterton and Miss Bolton will take good care of the class while I am gone.

5D - Mr Duff - That's it for the Spring term!! We have completed our persuasive writing piece and I will be looking at these over the Easter break. The rainforest display is taken over the stairway, and this has earnt you lots of compliments!! Well done, it looks great.

If you are going to the Isle of Wight, have a fantastic time and if you are not I know you will be having a super week as I will make sure of it!!

Enjoy your Easter, and the chocolate!! Be safe

5B - Mr Bird - With the end of this term comes the end of an era, especially for our class. The children ensured that Mrs Day, who has been with this group of children since September 2007, got a rousing send off for her retirement. She has been at the school for 19 years and we will all miss her.

Part of this week has been used to review a number of areas of the children's learning. They responded well to this challenge and have identified what they want to achieve by the end of year 5.

We have also completed our Amazon Rainforest topic and been highly creative with some of the activities relating to Easter.

Next term the children will be taking the class blog over completely. I know that they are keen to participate in this and I look forward to seeing some interesting accounts of our week.

Our first week back will be marked by some of the class attending the actvity week on the Isle of Wight whilst others will be engaged in a Darlinghurst activity programme. In both cases the children actually left  school today for the end of term holiday in a very excited mood.

Thank you to all the parents who have returned the necessary documents for the Isle of Wight and please don't hesitate to pass on any last minute information regarding your children when you attend on Monday 20th. April.

Have an enjoyable and safe holiday.

6H - Mr Hautler - Having been here for 19 years, Mrs Day is now leaving Darlinghurst school. She has been a big part of the school but is now retiring for a peacfull life away from the school. We will miss her but know she will have a great time.

Year 6 have been making ginger bread houses. Having being smotherd in sweets, most of the ginger bread houses stayed up. Fruit pastles, wine gums, smarties all went on. Each house struggled to stay up.
