What's this?? A big plug !!

Sorry for the pun but we really do need some people to help us out !!

Thursday 5th March is World Book Day and lots of different activities will be going on in and around the school that day. After school we have a book fair where some fantastic books will be on sale BUT we need some parent helpers to assist us with the running of it.

It will held straight after school and will last to about 4:15pm, so if you could spare this time it will be much appreciated. If you could let the office or better still Mrs Chatterton know that would be great. Thank you in advance for anyone lending their help.

Year 6 look for the next apprentice !

This week saw Year 6 compete in teams to see who can make the most money from their original investment of £5. It was a great example of business and enterprize at it's fullest. The event, which was held in the hall, had a fantastic atmosphere, lots of persusive paraphernalia and sales people that Alan Sugar would be proud of. An excellent job Year 6, I thoroughly enjoyed my cookies, pancake and my car has never looked cleaner !!

International Food Fortnight

Unfortunately this has now come to an end but in a way it's probably best it has !! Having seen the amount of food being cooked these last two weeks, many of which I have managed to sample, half term is a welcome break. I start my diet tomorrow  The children have had lots of fun, classrooms have been changed into restaurants, the kitchen area has been non-stop and so has the laughter. Well done to all staff, a cracking two weeks had by all !!

So, what else has been happening at Darlinghurst Primary and Nursery School this week?

RW - Mrs Weston - RW focused on Mexico and Italy this week as part of our food week. For Mexico, we made salsa and guacomole in class which we all tasted with tortilla chips and for Italy, we made margherita pizzas! We located both countries on the world map, read books about the countries and made various things associated with them e.g Mexican hats, a Mexican pinata, a pin the tail on the donkey game, Mexican bracelets, the Leaning Tower of Pisa from clay and also the Leaning Tower of Pisa on the First Artist computer program. We also had spaghetti in the builder's tray to play with on the creative table and sang a Mexican song in music. We also had the opportunity to play the Mexican themed game, 'Buckaroo!'

Mrs Weston is very much looking forward to reading RW's holiday diaries when they return after the break. (See the homework sheet inside book bags). Have a safe and fun holiday!

RM - Mrs McIntosh - RM have thoroughly enjoyed International Food week and have become very familiar with the cultures and customs of Mexico and Italy.  We have had a variety of multisensory experiences which included manipulating clay into The Leaning Tower of Pisa, creating sombreros and tasting guacomole, tomato salsa and pizza....which were all extremely delicious!
I am looking forward to reading the children's diaries next week to find out what exciting or restful things (ha, ha!) you've been up to.  Happy holidays and see you soon.  Take care.

1/2D - Mrs Dutton - We have been thinking about and making block graphs and pictograms for our favourite things this week and we  have all made a non fiction poster or book, remembering the many features of this type of writing. Some children wrote their non fiction books about electricity and drew clear circuits to show electricity could move around. Well done to everyone who enjoyed running in the Cross Country Event on Wednesday, you all did very well.

1/2B - Mrs Barrington - Class 1/2B have not had the best of health this week, we have suffered from sickness and bad coughs.  Thankfully it is now half term and we can all have a good rest as we have worked really hard learning about electricity, non-fiction writing and block graphs.
We finished the week on a high making our Chinese stir fry noodles and whilst my tummy was not up to eating the children had great fun using their chop sticks, even though it did take them a while.
When we return back to school the children will be making their puppets which we have already designed.  I would be very grateful if any old bits of materials, wool and felt be sent into school.  Thank you..
Enjoy half term!

3/2B - Miss Bernard - Hello everybody!

Has been a bit of a strange week as I have been a bit under the weather, which is most unusual for me. I think a week's rest will sort me out good and proper!

However, the children have been hard at work, as usual, and I am particularly proud of the calligram poems they have produced in groups, pairs and individually. The language and the creativity that they have displayed is fantastic. Will be making them into a class book.

I hope you all have a great week off you deserve it! - Miss Bernard

3/2C - Mrs Chatterton - This week for our international theme we made blackbread- a recipe from Sweden. All the children took part at some stage in the making. We then had it with butter in the afternoon. Even Mr Knight had some and survived! We also made a cucumber salad from Denmark- it was very sweet and vinegary, but nice.
In maths we have been looking at frequency tables and graphs- the children have got better and better at interpreting data. I told them how many adults have to use graphs in their various professions, so let them know if you do use them.
In English we have looked at calligrams- when words look like their meaning, the children did some lovely work in the computer suite using wordart to shape their words.
Almost all the myths are now written in best and will go on our class wall today!
The children have looked at Sutton Hoo as part of their Anglo-Saxon project. A nice trip for a holiday activity!!!
Hope you all have a lovely half term and the snow stays away.

4J - Mrs Johnston - What fun we have had this week running our Italian restaurant - Leonardo's.  The children learnt vital skills such as how to measure that their table cloth would be big enough to cover the table, how to lay a table for a three course meal, English table manners and how to prepare a variety of Italian dishes.  Over two days they took turns in being diners and restaurant staff.  The restaurant staff were very attentive to their customers and praised for their level of service.  The diners enjoyed a three course meal (generally six course as most of them tried everything!) of tomato and mozzarella salad or fagiolio e tonno salad (bean and tuna), followed by homemade pizzas (even Mr Knight said they were delicious) or spaghetti bolognese with a dessert of either homemade ice-cream or child friendly tiramisu. We all enjoyed the whole experience and the children have a much better understanding of what goes into making an enjoyable eating experience.  (See the gallery for a picture of the classroom as a restaurant.)

We owe an especially big thank you to Mrs Burns who helped make it all possible.  There are no plans as yet for Johnston & Burns to open their own chain of restaurants.  We are very much looking forward to our half term break!

5D - Mr Duff - Making pancakes, researching Shrove Tuesday (2 weeks early on that), drama about adverbs, playing World Maths Day during ICT, making podcasts, Ziggy assembly, art linked to our family connections, writing recipes, music with Mrs Warren, going to Year 6's business and enterprize day, improving our throwing skills in P.E. and French !!!! Phhhewwwww, did we really manage to fit that all in this week. I may or may not see you all after half term, it all depends on when my baby arrives, but have great half term, be safe and relax.

5B - Mr Bird - With Half Term upon us it has given me the time to reflect on some of the things we have done over the last two weeks. It is at times like this that you wonder how we have found the space to do so many different activities. Last week started with an in depth study of snow, for all those children who were able to attend, with a focus on some appropriate writing involving their senses. The afternoon provided the perfect chance to exercise their design, construction and artistic interpretation skills when they made giant snow figures!

Once the weather settled down, they returned to completing their preparation for an interesting piece of non-chronological writing about the animals they had researched. This marked the culmination of some excellent cross curricular work where, prior to the writing, they had the opportunity of presenting their research material in a variety of ways.

The International Food Fortnight started with reviews of various recipes and the skills involved in increasing, or decreasing, the quantities to accommodate changes in the numbers catered for. Bring a mum to school day could not have happened at a better time as the extra help allowed the children to work in small groups, under 'mum' supervision, and prepare a variety of foods. With a focus on Germany, traditional foods were provided for them to experience some of the countries dishes. I was pleased to see that most of the children were willing to try these different foods.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the mothers who were able to attend and help make this event a huge success.

This week has been marked by business fever as Year 6 made their final adjustments to various business ventures which they launched on Thursday and we had our own version of 'The Dragons
Den / Apprentice'. Motivated by the chance of trying out a new business, if they were successful in presenting their business plan, the children took their task of gathering the relevant information very seriously. The importance of mathematics assumed a new and very high profile in their planning.

Once they were prepared the assistance of two Year 4 children was sought and together with two adult dragons the
process became very 'real' for our young entrepenuers. The Year 4 dragons insisted on the Apprentice stock phrase being included and seemed to enjoy saying, "Your fired!" Following much deliberation a business venture was chosen so next half term will see the launch of this successful one.

Apart from these activities you will find the children are now experts at: adapting recipe quantities, discovering the amount of diagonals in any 2D shape, commuity art and speaking some basic German words.

There is just too much more to include here, so let me finish by saying have a fantastic week off and I look forward to  seeing evrybody back and refreshed ready for a great time next half term. In the event you are anywhere near Iceland shop in London Road, Leigh, please keep a look out for our class community art work. A number of pieces of work protraying the children's view of the businesses are now on display.

6H - Mr Hautler - This week has been enjoyable, we have been having lots of fun. Business and Enterprise day was the highlight of the week.We were selling a variety of products that we made with a budget of 5 pounds. Many companies made a lot of profit others made less.It was a great experiance for year 6. Year 6 have been preparing for this event for  6 weeks. All the money we earned will be going to the year 6 end of year prom. We hope everyone liked coming to our stalls and hope you liked our products . We are looking forward to our new topic In The Garden which will link to our school allotment. We hope you have a nice break in the holidays.
Zara and Chani

6M - Mr Martin - How sensational was our Business and Enterprise Day.  6M would like to thank all the parents/carers who helped behind the scenes in supporting this particular enterprise.  Walking through the hall was like walking through Camden market owing to all the wonderful wares and services which were up for sale.  And didn't they do well?!  Combined profit of all stalls came to an astonishing £210 with the 'Bitz n Bobz' grossing over £90 on their own!  It was a terrific learning experience where the children learnt about budgeting, teamwork, advertising, marketing and a whole host of vital business practices.

A jolly well done from Mr Martin and Mrs Jones

Bring a Mum to school day !!

Today (Friday) saw lots of our mums going back to school. No it wasn't a reunion, it was Darlinghurst Primary and Nursery's Bring a Mum to School Day !!

From just the activities that were going on in my class and then walking around the school to see other classes, I could see that the children and mums thoroughly enjoying themselves. A huge thank you for all your support !!!

So, what else happen this week at Darlinghurst Primary and Nursery School?

Nursery -Two new children came to Nursery this week, all of the other children were very kind to them. We found the snow at the beginning of the week very exciting. As it is international food week we made an Anglo- Greek salad using cheese, cucumber and tomatoes which we had for snack. We had 12 mums come Bring a Mum to School day, it was lovely to see everybody playing together.

RM - Mrs McIntosh - Wow, what an exciting week!  Class RM have been working really hard listening for and thinking of rhyming words. We thought about poor old Humpty Dumpty and how we could have helped him stop hurting himself by landing on different types of materials.   Bring a mum to school day was fun with lots of delicious food being made and eaten!!

RW - Mrs Weston - RW have had a Humpty Dumpty rhyming week! We have decorated boiled eggs, thought of rhyming words to place on Humpty's brick wall, did an experiment to see which material would prevent Humpty from cracking when we pushed him from his wall, did fried egg addition and made breakfast burritos with scrambled egg! A big thank you to all the mums who came in to help on Friday. We very much enjoyed seeing you all and hope you had a pleasant visit.

1/2B - Mrs Barrington - Another busy week in class 1/2B  We have spent the week learning about China.  The children have made paper dragon puppets, lanterns and willow patterned plates.  We even have our own chopsticks now, not that we could pick up much.  The children learnt a traditional Chinese dragon game which we played in the hall.
Thanks to all the mums that came into class 1/2B.  We hope you had fun and enjoyed spending time with us.  It was great to see so many and l appreciate all the efforts you went to.

1/2D - Mrs Dutton - Chinese week has been very exciting for us! We have been reading Chinese traditional stories and have made dragon puppets and red lanterns, painted blue willow pattern plates and have been practising how to say hello and how are yo in Mandarin. As we had so many things to do, we will be cooking Chinese food next week. Thank you to all the mums, grandmothers and aunties who joined in and organised activities on 'Bring a Mum to School Day', it was lovely to have you in the classroom.

3/2C - Mrs Chatterton - What a busy week! The snow meant we could do some lovely snow activities- poems, testing the capacity of snow before and after melting and trying to stop the snow from melting.
T
he children have written their own myth. They are very impressive. We have worked on capacity and time this week.We are still busy working on springs in science- some excellent homework on this.Bring a mum to school day was fantastic- thanks to all the mums who did activities with the children.

3/2B - Miss Bernard - Hello everybody!

What a week it's been! We had such a great time on Monday when it snowed. I'm so glad that the school didn't close. The children really benefited from being here. They had so much fun and showed so much interest in our snow activities. The children chose to draw pictures, using pastels, write snow poems, make a game and research "Where does snow come form?"
They produced some really beautiful work. Mrs Dennis and I are going to try and find some where to display is all.
This week we have also been written quest myths. the children have been really excited about writing them. They are trying very hard to add lots of adjectives to describe their characters and settings.
We have also been doing Capacity and Time in Maths. The children love these topics, especially Capacity because it involves lots of practical activities.
Next week, in Literacy we are writing poems that contain calligrams and in Maths we are doing data handling. Try to find out what a calligram is.You could also write your own poem at home and bring it in to read to the class. If you have any favourite poems or poetry books bring them in too.

Enjoy your weekend! - Miss Bernard

4J - Mrs Johnston - Despite the wintery start to the week we have had a fantastic time in 4J. Monday was Groundhog Day (yes, really) so we thought about which day we would like to live over and over again.  I like the version where they leave the classroom really tidy at the end of the day!  We played in the snow and have started thinking about our Italian restaurant.  We have made a collage of the Rialto Bridge in Venice as every Italian restaurant seems to have one of these.  We have made cutting templates for pizza and learnt that to share a sliced loaf between the class they would have 5/6 of a slice each!  We have followed instructions to make and eat a pasta salad.

A huge 'thank you' to all the 'mums' who came to school on Friday.  We all had a super day sampling Polish pancakes, food the Ancient Egyptians would have eaten, smoothies, fruit kebabs, iced biscuits and brioche.  We folded napkins and made flowers for our restaurant as well as hearing about life for an evacuated child in WWII and taking part in orienteering and a variety of games.  Thank you to everyone who made such a big effort to make our day so memorable.
4J - remember to ask your family what they like about eating in a restaurant.

5D - Mr Duff - After a very snowy start to the week and only having about half my class on both Monday and Tuesday, the week turned out to be very productive. We managed to complete our non-chronological report about animals, I am looking forward to reading those but the highlight of the week had to be the Bring a Mum to School Day!! Lots of mums, lots of activities, lots of fun !!! Thanks for all the mums that came in and made our day fantastic, same time next year?

6M - Mr Martin - A big thank you to all the mums who came to support Our Bring a Mum to School Day! We had a great day cooking shortbreads and generally pampering ourselves thanks to the mothers who turned 6M into a nail bar. The coming week will be dedicated our Business and Enterprise Day where children will be pitting themselves against each other in the world of commerce. Whose business will succeed and whose will fail? Thursday will be the day of reckoning!
