Velcommen ! If you don't already know this is Norwegian for welcome and we were lucky enough to have over 40 teachers from Norway come and have a look at how fantastic Darlinghurst Primary and Nursery School is !

Our good name has gone global !!!!

What else has been happening this week?

RM - Mrs McIntosh - RM have had a "shape" week this week. Looking at 2D and 3D shapes (so you can test them to see if they can remember their names - they're quite difficult!) They also had their first Table Tennis lesson on Wednesday - they didn't actually get to the table tennis bit, but once they have learnt some other skills, they will get on to that exciting bit! Lets hope the weather is on the up so we can get them outdoors more next week! Have a great weekend everyone. Mrs McIntosh

RW - Mrs Weston -RW have had a great week continuing with our ‘Patterns’ topic. We have made repeating shape patterns, looked at patterns in the environment and made our own zebra stripe patterns. We had our first session of table tennis in P.E and wrote some fantastic sentences as a whole class.

1B - Mrs Barrington - Class 1B have been very busy with their topic work on animals.  We have looked at leaflets relating to caring for a pet and then wrote our own information piece.  We have also been looking at the features found in non-fiction books including, index and contents pages.  Our big achievement this week has been our ability to group and count in tens.  We are really good at this now.Looking forward to discussing your childs learning at parent consultations.

2/1B - Miss Bernard - Hello everybody!

In Class 2/1B we have started doing author studies and our first one is Roald Dahl. All the children love his stories and this week the have been writing book reviews on George's Marvellous Medicine. They had to think about favourite/least favourite parts and say why. Some of them then went on to write about other Roald Dahl books they like, why they think that he is a good author and who they would recommend the book to. The children did a good job and with much enthusiasm! Next week they will be writing their own stories based on the book e.g.. Miss Bernard's Marvellous Medicine.

In Numeracy the children have been adding, bridging 10 and finding the difference. Again, they worked very hard. Some of them found this work very challenging, but they still did their best.

The children have produced some fantastic pictures using photographs of buildings in the local area. They each had a photograph of a building, then using their imaginations they had to draw in surrounding details. Well done children, they are excellent!

Next week the children will looking at 2D/3D shapes and shape in the environment and linking their findings with our Materials topic. They are also doing fractions, looking at halves and quarters of shapes and numbers.

Enjoy your weekend. I think the weather's going to be lovely. Make the most of it!! - Miss Bernard

2/1D - Mrs Dutton - This  week  we  have  been  finding  out  more  about  the  Great  Fire  of  London . We  discussed   why  the  fire  spread  so  quickly,  thinking  about  the  materials  used  to  build  houses  in  1666,  and  comparing  them  to  materials  used  to  build  now.  We  have  also  thought  about  the  different  materials  George  used  to  make  his  Marvellous  Medicine  in  the  story  by  Roald  Dahl.  We  have  been  focussing  on  capital  letters  and  full  stops  in  our  writing  time  and  using  a  nimber  line  to  find  the  difference  between  two  numbers  in   Numeracy.  The  children  all  deserve  their  Golden  Time  this  week!

3S - Miss Slann - Well done 3S we have had lots of fun writing letters to our Viking friends this week, I'm sure they will reply soon! I especially enjoyed screwing your top copy work up into balls to give them the 'authentic' look!!! You should have seen your faces! They look very good though so well done. We had quite an interesting Friday with our Gerry Peacher chat show, you were a fabulous audience and booed in all the right places. Also we all met Tango the snake wasn't he lovely? I'll print the photos off so you can show your families very soon. Have a relaxing weekend, don't forget your sun cream though it's meant to be hot!!!!

3P - Mrs Peacher - Just wanted to start by saying a huge thank you to all of the staff, parents and children who supported me in The Little Shop of Horrors last week. The show was a big success and I have just managed to get my voice back. There will be another opportunity to see the show in May if you missed it this time! Class 3P have had a very busy week writing letters to Vikings which will be posted via the time machine in my cupboard!!! We also took part in a Tricia style chat show with Anglo-Saxons and Vikings debating who should live in England. Well done to Libby & Brendon who took on the part of the kings. I think the visitors from Norway were impressed with our acting skills!! The children have also been very brave today when they held a corn snake called Tango. Thanks to Wendy the dinner lady for bringing him in.

4B - Miss Bolton - This week has been busy as usual. The class produced some good Literacy work based on a story from Chembakolli and a dilemma the main character had.
In numeracy we have been developing our skills of subtraction in real life situations. This has been difficult, so any practice at home with using subtraction when dealing with money every day would help.
We are continuing to raise money to help subsidize our Kentwell Hall trip. We need approximately £350 in total to bring the cost down to £15 each. With just 2 simple fundraising events, we have banked £60. We're getting there slowly! However, with a couple of larger fundraising projects in the pipeline, I'm confident we will do it by June.
One of them is noted on this weeks News and Views, a 'bring and buy' sale. So we are encouraging everyone to have a spring clean out and donate items for us to sell.

4AB - Mr Bird + Mrs Amran -This week provided the opportunity to find out more about the village of Chembakolli with the children examining various aspects of life in rural India. They then wrote and role played the ending of a traditional story based on one of the village festivals. There were a number of budding actors and actresses who were only too willing to demonstrate their skills.
Wednesday saw the class experiencing the challenge of running a small business when they, together with 4A, provided popcorn for the rest of the school. This was a successful enterprise with the funds going towards the trip to Kentwell Hall in June.
The class had the pleasure of being the first to meet the visiting teachers from Oslo during a P.E. session and once again they enjoyed putting on a confident performance.
I would like to take this opportunity to ask all of the year 4 parents to remind their children about making sure they have their P.E. kit in school all week. Thank you.

5J - Mrs Johnston - Super science soakings and snakes!
What a fantastic week 5J.  You have learnt so much about which counties are in the British Isles - don't forget to test your parents!
You know have a great understanding of the poem, 'The Listeners', by Walter de la Mere.  I was impressed with the way you dealt with the older language.
We have spent a long time discussing evaporation and fair testing culminating in our investigations on Friday.  Well done to our brave guinea pigs who were soaked as part of the investigation,'Does the amount of surface area exposed to air affect the speed at which clothes dry?'
It has been a week full of surprises including having a visit from a corn snake called Tango.
I wonder what will happen next week?

5D - Mr Duff - After a sleepy Monday where half of us were still in the Isle of Wight and the other half wanting to have another bbq, we got right back into the swing of things on Tuesday with some excellent art work. Your religious symbols were nothing short of superb. They are now proudly displayed at the front of our classroom to be admired by all visitors.

With our termly topic being The British Isles we wasted no time in finding out many new and exciting things about the place we live. Our researching skills were tested to the limit and you coped really well. Share what you have learnt this week with someone at home.

To end the week you really impressed our Norwegain visitors with a great science lesson about evaporation. We have our three measuring cylinders filled with milk, diet coke and water to see which one evaporates the most. What did you predict would happen?

6HC - Mr Hautler and Mrs Chatterton - You have two blogs this week, one from Mr Hautler and one from Mrs Chatterton. Lucky you !

Mr Hautler said:
This week we have been learning about forces, discursive text, negetive numbers and movie making.
Science
In science we have been looking at forces. The forces are friction, air resistance, gravity, up thrust, magmatism and compression.
Maths
In maths we have learning about negative numbers. We found the basic of negative numbers quite easy
but when we went in to the complicated numbers, it got more difficult.
Litracy
We have been writing digursive text.Disgursive text is a argument, for and against.
Movie making
Also this week we have been planning and making silver-screen movies.
Silverscreen movies are black and white and have no sound.
We have been challenged to make our movies in 3 minutes our less.

Some super projects on 'The Tudors' were handed in this week. The children had worked very hard and had presented the information in a variety of ways. Some had used their own individual sense of humour to comment on Tudor life. Mrs Chatterton really enjoyed reading them. Well done 6HC

Super week all round by the looks of things !!

The weather tomorrow supposed to be nice and sunny, I think I might have to dust of the bbq and buy some burgers ! I know I have just jinxed it !!
