So the Summer term is upon us. This in itself seems very odd seeing that I built a snowman with my daughter just two weeks ago ?!?!

So what has been happening this week at Darlinghurst Primary and Nursery School?

Most of Year 5 have been in the Isle of Wight !

Bring a dad to school day saw lots of dads, step-dads, uncles and grandads come in and help around the school, so a big thank you to you.

But was has been happening in the classrooms?

RM - Mrs McIntosh - This week RM have started their new topic of "patterns". We have looked at different patterns including seasons and the weather. The children have really enjoyed it and have really thought about the kind of things that happen in each of the seasons. Today is Bring a Dad to school day and the children are having great fun!

RW - Mrs Weston - RW have had a great week back and have started work on our new ‘patterns’ topic. We have looked at the pattern of the seasons and made a seasons wheel, looked at the pattern of the weather and made up our own weather maps. We even told our own weather forecasts in the classroom! We had a lovely response for Bring A Dad to School day. Thank you to all the dads who gave up their valuable time to come in and spend time with the children. It was very much appreciated.

1B - Mrs Barrington - We have the topic 'animals' this  half term.  Already we have painted animal habitats and made whale mobiles.  Class 1B  have also looked at a variety of animal foods and decided that  we really didn't like the smell of  fish flakes.  In our numeracy we have been grouping objects and counting in multiples of ten. Next week we shall be counting in five's.  Most of our literacy this half term will be non-fiction.  Already we have written some information texts and produced questions relating to animals.

2/1D - Mrs Dutton - From Talking and Sharing Time It sounds as if everyone had an enjoyable Spring Break holiday and took part in a variety of activities with their families.
This term we are going to be thinking about the Topic of Materials and we have started this by finding out about twisting, bending squashing and stretching different substances to see if they stay changed or go back to their original shape. We havw also been thinking about the materials used to make buildings along time ago and how they  caught  fire easily in the Great Fire of London.  With our dads help on Friday we have begun to turn our classroom into the bakery in Pudding Lane where the fire started!

2/1B - Miss Bernard - Hello everybody, welcome back! I hope that you enjoyed your spring break, I know that I did!

This week we have been looking at Materials. We are thinking about the different materials used to make objects, what they are like and why we might use these materials. We went for a walk and looked at buildings in the local environment, we took photographs. We discussed the materials used to make buildings and used the photographs to create our own pictures. We are currently designing and making pictures and items to create our role play area. This half term it is going to be the bakery where the Great Fire ofLondon began. Next week will be continuing and building on these activities.

In Numeracy we have been doing place value up to hundreds, tens and units and rounding up/down to the nearest 10/100. The children have worked enthusiastically and it has shown because they have picked these concepts up really well. Next week we will be doing tables tests on the 2 times table. In class we are practising addition and finding the difference.

Have a lovely weekend! - Miss Bernard

3S - Miss Slann - First of all I would like to say a big thanks to all of the 'DUGS' (dads, uncles and grandads) that came into our class today. The children really enjoyed having you all in school and I hope that you enjoyed yourselves. I must say the children have produced the neatest Viking longships I've ever seen in year 3 before! Well done DUGS! The children have really thrown themselves into the

Viking topic and have produced some beautiful pictures of longships and learnt all about why the Vikings came to Britain. Well done to all of you that researched for your homework, all of the information will be very useful over the next few weeks. Have a good weekend and sorry if we wore all of our DUGS out!

4B - Miss Bolton - What a week! Firstly, welcome back to the summer term. I hope you all had a good 2 weeks off. I'm ending Friday rather tired out after a fun packed 'Bring a dad to school day'. We iced biscuits to sell, which raised about £38. The dads and children made some advanced paper aircraft which we flew around the hall and found the one that went the furthest - well done to Chelsi and Jack who made super ones that really did fly the length of the hall!
Next week is a fulll 5 days and we will be completing our 2nd fund-raising event towards the end of the week.
Don't forget deposits for the trip to Kentwell Hall are also due in on Monday. Any problems with this, then please come and see me.

4AB - Mrs Amran + Mr Bird - We had a wonderful first week back. Everybody returned from the holiday refreshed and ready for action!  Even though Mr Bird was in the Isle of Wight this week, the children behaved brilliantly for Mrs McLauchlan. Well done.
The week ended on a high note with 5 Dads and 1 Granddad attending "Bring a Dad to school day". They entered into the spirit by playing games, icing biscuits and taking part in a Bridge Building competition. Thank you for your enthusiasm.

Year 5 - What a week !!! 5D and 5J mixed into one to make a classroom filled with fantastic children. You were a credit to yourselves, well done. I hope you enjoyed doing lots of PE, making things, painting, having a BBQ and watching a production of Joseph at Westcliff High School for Boys. I know I did. The rest of Year 5 were in the Isle of Wight and I am sure we will hear all about that next week on the blog. Back to normal on Monday though, get ready for lessons !!

6HC - Mr Hautler + Mrs Chatterton - Well what an exiting week this has been! We have been continuing on with our SATS revision as normal, only 3 and a half weeks until the big week! In maths we have been working on our 3D and 2D shapes, while also working on our mental maths and time. In Literacy we have been writing persuasive letters to the Mayor, but they are not going to be sent! Also, in science, we have been studying food chains, adaptation and habitats. We are studying in a new topic called 'Silver Screen' as we are investigating the Cinema. We are making our own movies, by taiking lots of pictures, and playing them really quickly, silently and in black and white like the first films were made. On Youtube we watched two of Thomas Edisons films e.g Fred Otts Sneeze, A Christmas Carol as well as a modern movie called Charlie the Unicorn which we all really liked! Thanks for reading! - By Freya and Bethany

6M - Mr Martin - Thank you dads in supporting 'Bring a Dad to School Day', I think you all agree that 6T contains engineers of the future! With SAT's just around the corner, please ensure your child revises in small but frequent bursts from the CGP books. Just to remind you that P.E is on Monday mornings from now on. Have a lovely weekend, looking forward to seeing you all bright and early next week!

So as you can see, we have hit the Summer term running and things are good !

Have a super weekend
